Description
This Eagle pommel American officer's sword dates ca.1820-1835 and is mounted with a 29.5" blade. Etched blade decorations include military trophies, canon and florals. Remnants of bluing are still visible. Hilt features two langets, front one is decorated with the Federal Eagle and shield. Sword had sustained some damage, back-piece of the hilt is a bit bowed out, and as a result the grip is extending beyond it in one spot; back of the scabbard shows a break midway, which doesn't extend to the front.
Eagle pommels of this style are generally considered to be of French manufacture for import to the US. This particular style of hilt was possibly fabricated by the Berger Co. in Paris.
