Description

This is the naval sword by the most desirable American maker of the 1800s. Sword is maker-marked by Nathan Ames on the obverse recess and the scabbard top locket. The gilt brass furniture of the hilt and the scabbard still retains most of its original clear factory varnish, which has darkened with age. Blade is 29" long, 1 1/8" wide at the recess, beautifully etched in crisp clear detail. Blade retains most all of its factory polish, and has a shallow nick on the edge, mid-blade. Scabbard leather has signs of wear, with the lacquer and gilding worn off the scabbard drag.
A wonderful Civil War Union naval officer's sword!
