Carlos Alfonso Gardiner was born in Spain on October 19th, 1879, grew up in Illinois, entered the US Naval Academy in 1896, graduating in 1900. Upon receiving his lieutenant's commission he served as a naval engineer on the battleship USS Virginia [BB-13] , and while on her, circumnavigated the globe in 1907-1909, visiting over 30 countries.


After resigning his commission in 1912 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander, C.A.Gardiner became an expert on the international maritime trade, focusing on South America. He was a member of the famed Explorers Club in New York. C.A.Gardiner passed away on January 13th 1943.


The condition of the chapeau de bras and the lieutenant's epaulettes is quite superb. Purchased from the well-known London officers' supplier Joseph Starkey, they are contained in the original fitted box, with a maker's label on the lid, along with the plaque personalized with C.A.Gardiner name.
