This always-desirable Ames-made US M1840 NCO sword is in excellent condition. Dated 1864 on the obverse ricasso, it's also marked with the Armory Subinspector's initials JH - Joseph Hannis. The same mark is also present on the knuckle-bow. The outer portion of the counter-guard rib is stamped CSI or CSL, possibly standing for the Armory Subsinspector C.S. Leonard. Scabbard drag is stamped with a letter C. Brass hilt is in excellent condition, with a pleasant patina. 32" blade is in wonderful shape as well, with only a small area of superficial darkening towards the foible, otherwise bright and shiny. Leather scabbard is in very good shape, with a little weakness in one area. An excellent Civil War Union NCO sword by the most famous American sword maker.
