US M1840 ARMY NCO SWORD INSPECTED 1862

This early Civil War 1862 dated NCO sword is marked US ADK 1862 in three vertical lines on the obverse ricasso. There are no other markings to be found, which suggests a European import, possibly by Tiffany & Co, which did not mark their imported Civil War government contract M840 NCO blades. Blade has acquired a nice dark patina and is about 32"-long. Hilt has a pleasing mellow patina, casting quality is somewhat rough and unpolished, suggesting a hastily-made order for American import. Sword is very tight, with no loseness at the grip.
