This wonderful Spanish Colonial spade dates from the early 1800s, and is mounted with a 88cm long blade which is marked BREFFIT on the back. I wasn't unsuccessful in finding anything on this blade-maker.
Blade has a uniform dark patina. Hilt is unique to the Spanish Colonial vernacular. Characteristic peacock-shaped cup guard and other decorative elements can be seen on hilts of this style, which some attribute to Brazil.
Sword is very tight, lively and remains a very scarce, very well-done example of its style.
