REVERSE PAINTING ON GLASS PORTRAIT OF HMS FRIGATE SIRIUS

$0.00

Description
A superb mid-1800s piece! The level of detail is quite stunning here. You could spend a good hour with a magnifying glass being amazed by the intricacy of the painter's brush. Subject is the storied HMS Sirius, launched in 1797. A hero ship of the French Revolutionary and the Napoleonic wars, including being next to the HMS Victory in the Trafalgar, she was lost off the coast of Mauritius in the Battle of Grand Port in 1810.

Enclosed in the period bird's-eye maple frame measuring 42 x 36 cm, the artwork itself measures 33 x 26 cm, and is in excellent, unmolested state, which is remarkable, considering the very fragile eglomise medium. The little space between the glass pane and the background paper produces a three-dimensional effect.

I also have its companion piece, portrait of the HMS Wacousta, available for sale. Both of these ship's portraits look beautiful hanging next to one another.
