GEORGIAN REVERSE PAINTING ON GLASS OF THE HMS WACOUSTA

$0.00

Description

This is another fantastic Regency period English ship's portrait done in eglomise form, i.e. reverse-painted on clear glass, and backed with paper, with the added spacer between the glass and the paper surface, which creates a spacious effect, reflecting the delicate lines of the lampblack paint, and giving the artwork almost life-like presence. Housed in the period birds-eye maple frame, which measures 44 x 38 cm, the painting is 32 x 26 cm. I'm curious to know what are the two very large identical horizontal barrel-shaped objects, one at the forecastle, the other on the quarter deck. An officer in a launch is carrying a message to another ship in the background.

I also have for sale its companion piece, portrait of the HMS Sirius, done by the same hand.
