This rare variety of the French epee pour l'officier de la Marine carries a hilt a l'anglais, but with a distinct French straight knuckle bow. The grip is ebony, with a 'cigar band' medallion which is engraved with a fouled anchor, faint, but quite distinguishable. Brass parts of the hilt retain vestiges of the gilding in protected areas. Fighting quality, thick blade is 81 cm/just shy of 32", unadorned, with a nice uniform patina. An outstanding Directory/Consulate Period French naval officer's sword!
