Description

This beautiful paper knife dates to mid-19th century, and was probably made in France, where distinct and elaborate bronze-mounted knives and daggers were en vogue at that time. Overall length is 24 cm, blade is 11 cm long. Fittings are of cast and hand-chased bronze, with remnants of gilding. Front of the sheath is adorned with Napoleon's crowned head, surrounded by acanthus leaves. Both sides of the handle feature military motifs, including the Turkish scimitars and European broadswords, daggers, classical helmets and lion's masks. The inside of the sheath is lined with velvet. Condition is very sound, with good age patina on the bronze.
