This French officer's epee dates to the Directory period, ca.1795-1800. Hilt is brass, with remnants of gilding present in protected areas. Pommel is in the shape of a Roman helmet. Hilt is tight, the shell guard is a bit mobile, as they are on most swords of this style that I have encountered. Blade is 86 cm. long, sword is 98 cm. long overall. Blade is straight and true, with vestiges of engraved decorations at the forte.
Swords of this style were carried by the French Army and Navy officers of that period in the French Revolutionary Wars and during the Napoleonic First Empire period. A very similar sword was surrendered by the Rear Admiral Blanquet du Chayla to Admiral Nelson at the Nile.
