This French GARDE REPUBLICAINE Model 1876 cavalry helmet is in its complete and original condition, and dates ca.1876-1895. The leather liner is completely intact, the plumes are all original horse hair.
These helmets are rare, due to the fact that the Republican Guard Cavalry never numbered to more than two hundred horsemen. Established by Napoleon in 1802, Garde Republicaine is still active today, and is stationed in Paris, fulfilling ceremonial, as well as guard duties. The cockade is modeled after the crest of the city of Paris. Maker-marked on the back GODILLOT, for Alexis Godillot, French 19th century military dealer.
