This interesting English style cutlass or hanger dates to some time in the early to mid-18th c., and is mounted with a tri-fullered 55 cm. long blade. Sword is 70 cm. long overall. Blade has a step at the back, and is indistinctly inscribed on both sides. Hilt is brass, with an antler grip. Sword is tight, brass parts have acquired a dark patina.
It wouldn't be unusual to see swords of this type used by ship officers as personal weapons of necessity. Perhaps too crude for a naval officer, a sword like this would do for a merchant captain or a privateer.
