This outstanding Central Asian shashka is mounted with a stout 93 cm long blade which is stamped with the Mazar-i-Sharif mark and dated 1312 Hijri, which is 1894-1895 in the Gregorian calendar. There is also a small mark on the obverse ricasso, probably the maker's cartouche. The grip is composed of rhinoceros horn, quite rare and valuable in the Central Asia. This excellent sword hails from the Uzbekistan-Khorasan area, and is a heavy piece, with a massive, hatchet-like blade.
