CARRON COMPANY CAST GILT NEREID FROM STEAMSHIP

$395.00

Description
This is a beautiful, delicate object from the age of the luxury steamship travel. The four panels represent Amphitrite with her trident, perhaps Doris,Thetis or other Nereids riding the Dolphins. Four birds between the panels are depictions of Phoenix, reflecting upon the coat of arms of the Carron Company.

The quality of the casting is quite detailed, crisp, all intact. Gilding on the obverse is largely intact. Patina is beautiful. Object measures 19cm/7.5" in diameter.

This piece possibly functioned in a cover for heat or ventilation duct, or had another function in a luxury cabin on a Carron Steamship Line ship. Based on the subject matter and the decorative elements, I would date this to the late 19th-early 20th centuries.
