This rare British Royal Artillery 1821 Pattern sword is marked with the retailer's name on the reverse ricasso -
STOVEL
KING ST
TORONTO
Joseph Stovel was a prosperous Toronto tailor and sword cutler, who was active in the mid-1800s. I would date this sword ca.1850-1870.
The obverse side of the blade has a maker's proof disc inset in the ricasso. Blade is beautifully etched with Victoria's cypher, and wonderful Victorian decorations, as well as the standard RA symbolism. Blade is of Wilkinson type, and the sword may have been made by Wilkinson for Stovel. Blade is 34.5" long, with some mild spotting more prominent towards the point, and a couple of small nicks on the edge. The hilt is in wonderful shape, with excellent quality shark-skin covering completely intact. Sword has a nice, balanced feel to it.
A great Royal Artillery officer's sword complete with its original scabbard, with rare Canadian provenance, which dates to the period spanning the Fenian Raids and the North-West Rebellion!
