Description
A good Batten & Adams, Devonport-marked British 1827 pattern naval officer's sword. Blade is plain, 28.5"/72 cm long, well-balanced and in great original state. Grip is shagreen-wrapped, quite intact and tight. Drag is a folded-over sheet of copper, I would imagine, made aboard by a ship's carpenter or a blacksmith to replace the original one. Plain-bladed 1827 swords are much less common than the decorated ones. This one with a 28" undecorated blade was probably ordered by a financially-cautious officer to be worn when on watch. Proof disc is long gone. Batten & Adams partnership existed from 1850 to about 1870, so I'm dating this sword right in the middle, to 1860.
