This British 1742 pattern foot soldier's hanger dates ca. Seven Years War through the American Revolutionary War periods. Brass hilt has a nice patina, blade is marked on either side with either a running dog or a fox, derived from the Running Wolf of Passau blade-smiths, widely copied by the English makers in many different variations. Blade has darkened with age, has no pitting, just some signs of period sharpening. Grip has lost the wire wrap a long time ago. An almost identical piece is pictured in George Neumann's indispensable "Swords And Blades of the American Revolution".
