Description

The hilt of this scarce early Federal Period American horseman's saber is identical to sword no.18 in Harold Peterson's seminal work "The American Sword". Letters W H B or W H R and some numbers are scratched on the lower part of the grip. Curved blade is 32" long, with a single wide fuller on either side. Blade's architecture is reminiscent of the British 1796 patter light cavalry sword blades. Blade has acquired a beautiful dark patina, as did the lion pommel hilt with a split and divided, slotted guard. A wonderful American sword dating ca.1800!
