This eagle pommel American infantry or artillery officer's fighting sword is modeled after the British infantry flank officer's saber of the 1803 Pattern, and dates to approximately the same time. Massive hilt retains much of the original fire gilding, with a beautiful knuckle bow composed of a strand of grenades intertwined with two serpentine fuse cords. The quality and detail of the hilt casting is quite outstanding. Ivory over wood grip has an area of moderate loss near the pommel. Blade is 30"/79 cm long, and carries remnants of engraved military and floral trophies, as well as the Federal Shield. Blade is struck with a number 1 on the back, at the ricasso. There is an ever so slight bend of the back of the blade at the ricasso. There is some staining, but no pitting or corrosion on the blade. Scabbard chape is long gone.
American slotted hilts of this style are very rarely encountered, and this is the first one I have seen with this type of grenadier-style decoration on the knuckle bow. An excellent War of 1812 sword!
