US M1872 MOUNTED ARTILLERY OFFICER'S SWORD

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

This scarce US Model 1872 Mounted Artillery officer's sword features a beautifully etched 31" blade. Blade etching is crisp and undamaged, sporting the Federal Eagle along with various military and floral designs. This is one of the rarer post-civil War officer's swords, and the etched- bladed variety are even rarer. Shark-skin on the grip is completely intact, gilding is worn off the hilt, scabbard plating is bubbling [horse sweat did the job]. Maker's/retailer's mark is on the reverse side of the ricasso, J.M.LITCHFIELD, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
These swords saw service in the Indian Wars and the Spanish-American War, only to be replaced in the beginning of the 20th century with the generic M1902 sword for all officers.
