This deluxe sword features a nicely hand-chased silver-plated bronze hilt, with a down-turned shell guard decorated with a victorious Roman centurion surrounded by military trophies, fascines, axes, and standards. Two lions are peering inward from atop each side of the guard. The quillon is terminated with a dolphin's head. The Victory theme of the guard decoration is suggestive of a person with power and responsibility. The style is typically French, quite the same as the French general officers swords from the Restoration and Louis-Philippe time frame.
Dolphin's head as a known symbol of the naval provenance might tempt some, and to me remains uncertain, although should be considered.
The shape of the eagle pommel is consistent with the Widmann vernacular. The knuckle bow is bent some inward. Blade is 32" long, blued and gilded over light engraving of generic military and floral motifs. Obverse ricasso is maker-marked with initials SH. Blade retains a generous amount of blue and gild, with some browning.
