This attractive American artillery officer's plumed knight's head pommel sword is in the French fashion and dates prior to 1850. Counter guard is nicely decorated in fine detail with the eagles, stars, federal shield, freedom cap, American Indian chief, etc. Spadroon blade is 31" long, retains traces of blue and gild and is engraved with cannon, flags, floral and martial motifs. Scabbard was professionally repaired at the time of use. Guard is a loose, as is the case with many, if not most of the swords of this style and vintage. Mother of pearl grips are in excellent untouched state, bound with gilt wire. Overall a very appealing sword with seldom seen hilt style.
