FRENCH RESTORATION PERIOD GENERAL OFFICER'S SWORD CA.1820

NO LONGER AVAILABLE

This beautiful French sword dates to the first quarter of the 19th century. According to Jean Lhoste's superb book LES SABRES PORTEES EN FRANCE, swords of this style were prescribed for the French general staff officers. The quality of casting on the hilt is exemplary, with significant intricate detail. Gilding is largely intact. There is a slight play between the hilt and the blade. Blade is 79 cm long, was cleaned in the past, and bears traces of original decoration. Scabbard is broken in three segments, but retains all of its leather and gilded furniture. An outstanding sword!
