EUROPEAN HUNTING SWORD IN IVORY AND FINE ETCHING CA.1780
Available in the following categories:
EDGED WEAPONS
This beautiful European hunting sword dates from the last quarter of 18th century, into the early 19th century, and is possibly Italian in origin.
Originally part of a trusse, both the fork and an accessory knife are long gone. Polished steel hilt supports the grip made out of one solid piece of elephant ivory; a rosette is nicely carved at the pommel. Blade is superbly etched and chased with two hunting scenes, running along the whole length of the blade, on either side. Each side of the blade features one well-composed hunting scene.
The obverse side displays a wooded landscape, hunter with his club-butt long rifle, while his his dog is barking up the deer, which are hiding in the forest.
Reverse side of the blade is decorated with another hunting scene, picturing a hunter with a hunting spear, a deer that is about to die, and a dog. Two other deer are running away, towards the point of the blade.
Blade is 59 cm long, 4.5 cm wide, massive, heavy, with a 20 cm long false edge.
Original leather over wood scabbard is in fine shape, with some scoffs and scratches. Scabbard mounts are en suite with the hilt. Blade slides into the scabbard effortlessly, yet tightly. An old collection or museum tag is attached to the locket. Just to reiterate - the baroque decoration of the blade is second to none, in both the quality and the beauty of the two compositions.
