EDGED WEAPONS

This European, possibly French, hunting sword is of the style popular with the naval officers in the mid-18th century. 61 cm-long, straight spadroon-style blade is nicely engraved at both sides of the ricasso with floral forms and dogs chasing game. I have counted a total of eight[!!!] dogs depicted on the hilt and the blade. The owner of the sword must have been fond of the animal. Grip is wrapped in shark skin, which appears to be in excellent condition, with no tears or flaking. Quillon is shaped as a dog's head, and is made of silver. Rudimentary disk guard has a break. Back of the blade is engraved with a talismanic arrow pointing to the blade's point. Presence of the knuckle bow, which is not often seen on these swords, further suggests usage by an officer. Sword feels very solid, and very comfortable to hold. An attractive and elegant mid-18th century officer's cuttoe.
