This elegant cavalry officer's sword dates ca 1790-1800. Brass hilt is of a classic and unmistakably French form. Obverse side of the ebony grip has a period crack, quillon was removed at the time of service. 82 cm-long blade has acquired a nice patina and has several clusters of shallow pitting, but no active rust or other damage. Blade has a 21 cm-long false edge. A narriow fuller extends from the tang only 12 cm short of the point. The sword is a joy to hold and swing, and fits very comfortably in my hand. B;lade is free of decorations, the sword is very heft, at 756 grams. It is obviously of "bataille"-quality and is of the type carried by French Napoleonic Cavalerie Legere officers in the late 18th-early 19th centuries Continental and Egyptian campaigns.
