This German Infanterie Offizier Degen Modele 1889 field officer's sword dates ca.1915-1918. In 1915, due to shortage of metals, hilts on these swords were officially allowed to be produced out of gilded steel, as opposed to the gilded brass on the earlier examples. This is such as a sword. Gilding has worn out in "high-traffic" areas of the hilt, leather finger loop is dry and cracked, 83 cm-long palasch blade is in very good shape, with some "in and out" wear towards the point, with the point being slightly blunted. Scabbard has lost most of it's black paint, and has some minor rust at the drag. An honest World War I Prussian Infantry company officer's trench-worn sword.
