This Venetian schiavona dates from the early to mid-1600s. The 74 cm long blade is marked with the "eyelashes" bladesmith's mark. One of the branches of the guard, as well as the pommel are struck with the Venetian Doges armory marks in the form of the winged Lion of St.Mark's. The basket guard was period-altered, a couple of branches were removed, as is often seen on these. Basket is free-floating on the tang. Blade has an old battle scar on one of the edges. Remarkably, the original grip leather covering is almost entirely intact. An excellent, expressive 17th c. schiavona!
