US M1852 NAVAL OFFICERS SWORD BY HORSTMANN CA.1865-1882

This very interesting US Navy officer's sword dates from the close of the American Civil War to 1882. Precise dating is facilitated by two things - blade width, measuring at 1", and maker's mark of the crowned king's head, of the famous Weyersberg family of sword-makers. In 1883 Weyersberg and Kirschbaum companies merged, and in addition to the crowned king's head the mark of a helmeted knight's head was added. Blade is 28.5" long, very nicely etched in crisp detail with various US Navy motifs found on the swords of that vintage. Sword is nice and tight, grip has some minor losses on the ray-skin, scabbard is in fine shape and has shrink about 0.25" short of the blade.
While the Civil War period US Navy officer's sword are seen with some frequency and the late-1800s-1900s period swords are abundant, the 1860s-1880s variants are extremely hard to find!
