AUSTRIAN OR SOUTH GERMAN GRENADIER SWORD CA.1750

This mid-18th c. infantryman's hanger is Austrian or South Germanic, possibly Saxon in origin. Some Russian infantry sidearms of that period also have similar hilt characteristics. Blade is 63 cm, light and strong, with signs of age, use and cleanings over the centuries. Hilt has a wonderful uniform patina, and projects restrained beauty.
This rarely seen light infantry or grenadier weapon with a shell to protect the wrist in hand-to-hand combat can be dated from the 1720s to the 1770s. A nice, rarely seen mid-18th c. soldier's tessak!
