This late 18th-very early 19th c. American officer's eagle pommel sword is mounted with a massive 70 cm. long undecorated blade, marked with a letter G at the ricasso. Stylistically, eagle pommels of this type are known as the Osborn or weeping eagles, and were made in England for the American market in the pre-War of 1812 years. The grip is horn, hilt retains a fair amount of the gilding. Slotted guard is further enhanced by the crinkled edges and a sea-shell quillon. An excellent War of 1812 period officer's fighting sword, based on its shorter and stouter blade would have been suitable as a naval or marine officer's weapon!
