This Dutch marine cutlass dates to the last decade of the 18th c. Blade is 62 cm. long, with a nice patina and a couple of small nicks on the edge. Hilt is in fine shape, with no losses to the leather. The scabbard leather has split along the seam on the back, and a small piece of leather is missing near the scabbard shoe. In addition to serving with the Dutch Napoleonic period marines, swords of this type were issued to the Danish marines serving on the gunboats in the defense of Copenhagen against Nelson's navy in 1808, and called the Stralsund sabers. A scarce and attractive Napoleonic sword.
