This British Royal Navy 1805 Pattern midshipman's sword bears a diminutive hilt, 11.5 cm in length, and a 71.5 cm. long, unadorned blade; judging by its size, this sword was made for a mere youngster in his teens, a midshipman in Nelson's Navy. Sword is light as a feather. Both langets are engraved with uncrowned fouled anchors. The delicate hilt has loosened up over time, and is wobbly. The blade shows signs of prior cleanings, and has no active rust or corrosion. The top of the sharkskin-wrapped grip is chipped, an often seen occurrence with the hilts of this style. The sword dates to the first decade of the 19th century, and is exactly of the type worn by junior officers at Trafalgar and the Battle of Copenhagen.
