The hilt of this scarce early Federal Period American horseman's saber is identical to the sword no.18 in Harold Peterson's "The American Sword". Letters W H B or W H R and some numbers are scratch-marked on the lower part of the grip, perhaps the regimental stock numbers. Curved blade is 32" long, with a single wide fuller on either side. Blade has acquired a beautiful dark patina, as did the lion pommel hilt with a split and divided guard. A wonderful American sword from the period spanning 1790-1810!
