This one of a kind US Navy seaman's chest dates approximately ca.1907, based on the 46 stars painted on the American flag. the hinge hardwares is marked NORWALK LOCK CO. Norwalk Lock Company was operational in Norwalk, Connecticut from the 1850s to 1929.
Constructed of solid hardwood, the chest measures 32"x16.5"x13", and is very heavy.
The lid is nicely painted with the Federal eagle, Stars and Stripes, and the name F.B.ROSE USN. Researching the US Navy service records name will surely date this chest more precisely. There is age wear and scratches on the wood and the painted surface, which acquired a nice uniform patina. A fabulous, unique example of American sea-going folk art!
