This outstanding Ottoman khanjar bears a 29.5 cm long, curved armor-piercing rhomboid blade, decorated in gold koftgari on both sides. The blade is 18th century, perhaps earlier, and is of significant quality. It appears that it was rehilted some time in the 1800s, in the Balkans. Blades of this style were customary on the Ottoman court khanjars, mounted in walrus ivory, precious stones and fine silver work.
Handle is horn, in the Western Balkan style.
There is a small crack in the horn. Scabbard has lost all of its covering, which was either leather or velvet. Blade is most probably of wootz steel, and shows signs of prior cleanings. A wonderful 18th/19th century khanjar, with unique, high quality blade.
