This American naval officer's sword is marked with the maker's cartouche
at the ricasso.
According to the Directory of American Military Goods Dealers & Makers, Francis Jahn ran a small metal goods company in Philadelphia from the 1850s onward, but the company's military supply business was operational only during the Civil War, therefore this sword is guaranteed to date from 1861-1865.
Blade is 29" long and 1-1/4" wide at the ricasso.
Blade decorations are largely worn, but visible.
Ray-skin grip covering is long gone.
This proven Civil War naval veteran rests in its original scabbard, which has shrunk about 1/8" shy of the hilt.
