This fine early 18th century hunting sword bears a massive 50 cm long blade cut down from a military broadsword. Blade is engraved with the initials JBD, possibly owner's initials, maker's name or a regimental abbreviation.
It is very rare to see a sword of that age with its original scabbard, but in this case not only the scabbard, but the original belt frog is also present! The frog is stitch-decorated with a "bleeding heart". Leather has shrunk and split along the back seam.
The cast and hand-chased bronze hilt retains traces of original fire-gilding, and is superbly decorated with the stag and boar hunting scenes in deep relief. Hilt shows some looseness. A fabulous early 1700s piece with its original scabbard!
