AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR SILVER-HILTED OFFICER'S SWORD

EDGED WEAPONS
This wonderful cuttoe sword dates ca.1770, and is beautifully mounted with hand-chased silver and ebony hilt. The decorations are a mixture of hunting accouterments and rococo style ornaments; both quillons are in the form of hunting dog heads. The pommel has a stippled background, with raised floral decorations and a proud button. There is a rain keeper on the bottom of the hilt, also of sterling silver. The grip is ebony, circumscribed lengthwise with a series of grooves.
Fighting quality blade is Montmorency, 64 cm long and 2.5 cm wide at the ricasso. Blade has acquired a dark uniform patina. Blade is slender, long, and quite strong. Blades of this style were especially popular with the British officers in the period of the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War
Exact country of origin it uncertain, but based on the overall style of this piece I would suggest a French-made hilt, perhaps mounted for an English or American officer. Either an army or a naval officer could've owned a sword of this style.
