EUROPEAN GERMAN STYLE HIRSCHFANGER CA.1730
Available in the following categories:
EDGED WEAPONS
This hunting sword is thoroughly Germanic in style. Hilt details are very nicely cast and hand-chased in bronze, depicting deer hunting scenes on both the turned-down guard and the pommel. Knuckle bow's central piece is a full relief of Diana with the bow. Hardwood grip has acquired a wonderful patina. 54 cm long blade continues the hunting motif of the hilt, with prominently-displayed hunting bows, quivers and arrows. Based on the decorations, it would be plausible to surmise that the sword's owner was an avid bow hunter.
Swords of this fashion were favored by the upper classes and military officers as personal weapons from the early 1700s until the last quarter of the 18th century. Hilt shows some looseness, blade carries the signs of period cleanings . This particular sword, based on the style and decorations, dates ca.1710-1740, and was purchased from an estate of an old Massachusetts antique dealer.
