EUROPEAN HUSSAR OFFICER'S BASKET-HILTED SWORD CA.1775
Available in the following categories:
EDGED WEAPONS

This elegant European light horse officer's sword dates ca.1770-1790. Iron-mounted half-basket hilt shows a fine uniform patina, leather-covered grip retains all of its original quadruple copper wire binding. Back piece is faceted. Blade is 84 cm long, with a single wide fuller running 15 cm short of the point. Blade still shows faint engraved talismanic decorations, including the crescent moon. Multiple light battle nicks are evident on the blade's edge. There are vice marks near the ricasso, which, along with the washer onto which the tang is peened indicate that the blade was re-tightened on the hilt. The hilt is what makes this sword interesting. It's shape, while carrying some stylistic elements of the British cavalry officer's swords, has the Continental feel to it. Possibly Polish, Austrian or Germanic. Sword is definitely of fighting quality, light and very nicely balanced.
